A Home Away From Home
Here at the Taylor Retreat for Prader-Willi Syndrome, the well-being of our patients is first and foremost! The facility provides all the comforts of home in combination with our revolutionary cyclic therapy program. Patients spend three weeks at the Retreat, three to four times a year, with weekend visits from the family to help educate them and keep them in the loop with their child's progress. This approach to therapy creates a best of both worlds situation - giving PWS patients the structured environment they need, as well as the tools to succeed on their own!
Our Staff Really Cares!
Meet Janet! She is one of our registered dieticians on staff, specializing in the treatment of Prader-Willi Syndrome and the challenges patients face regarding food. Janet works with patients and their families to educate them about healthy food choices, moderation, and, most importantly, how to apply what they have learned during the time they spend at home. Our staff also includes personal trainers, doctors, nurses, psychologists, behavioral therapists and all the other professionals dedicated to helping our patients get the most out of their time at the Taylor Retreat.
We Make Exercise Fun!
At the Taylor Retreat, we strongly believe that physical activity is, along with diet, the most important part of managing weight in Prader-Willi Syndrome. And we help make it a family affair! Not only do our patients participate in team sports with their peers, which is always more fun than running on a treadmill, but on visitation days, we run classes that involve the parents and other family members, including yoga (which is also great for relieving stress!), aerobics, and dance. Who says working out has to be a bore?!
Education is Key!
Here's Melanie, our residential psychiatrist. In addition to prescribing medications to our patients, she is also highly involved in educating parents about what to do and what not to do when they have their child at home. Combating Prader-Willi is about more than just putting padlocks on the refrigerator, after all. It takes knowledge about the role that discipline and routine play in long term treatment and greater independence for our patients!
We Make Recovery Fun
This is Alison, one of our favorite patients! She's come a long way since she first came to the Taylor Retreat last year. This is her third session with us, and she just becomes more and more outgoing and lovable each time we see her. She loves coming back to the Retreat to see her friends and participate in all the great activities we offer, including art and music therapy, team sports, cooking classes, and so much more! Of course, our kids also spend time in regular school classes, but our teachers make learning so much fun that they hardly notice!
Here at the Taylor Retreat for Prader-Willi Syndrome, we are proud of all of our patients every day! We provide the tools and counseling for them to succeed, but they are really the ones who do the work!
